The old presbytery in Place de l'Eglise houses the ESF Chamonix, La Compagnie des Guides and the Office de Haute Montagne (OHM). For up to the minute weather the OHM has live satelite screens. General mountain saftey and weather info is also available on video and CD Rom.

Police

In the unfortunate event that you do have anything stolen or lost whilst on holiday, you will need to report the incident to the police for insurance purposes. The Gendarmerie is located in:
Chamonix - Route de la Mollard
Argentière - Rue Charlet Straton.

Cash Points

There are a number of cashpoints located around Chamonix. A list of banks and their phone numbers are listed in the directory.

Chemists

There are 5 in Chamonix, 1 in the Rue Paccard, 1 at each end of Rue Vallot, 1 Avenue de l'Aiguille du Midi and 1 in Les Pélerins near the hospital. In Argentière it is on Rue Straton. In France you must pay for all medication and then claim your expenses back from your insurance company. You may also be required to purchase items like crutches or knee braces. The Chemist will give you a receipt with a space for sticky labels (vignettes) from the packaging. To claim do retain the receipt with the vignettes and the doctor's prescriptions.

Insurance

It is imperative that you have comprehensive ski insurance. Policies differ, as does the excess so check the wording carefully. To make a claim, call the Assistance Company on your policy as soon as possible & note the reference number. If you have a plaster cast or can’t bend your knee and have to fly home let the insurance company know as the airlines can refuse you without prior notification.

Medical

There are 2 medical practices in Argentiére and 10 in Chamonix. The main hospital and emergency treatment centre is in Les Favrands, just beyond Chamonix Sud. Skiing is a dangerous sport and unfortunately accidents do happen. In general all expenses plus an excess of around €75 must be paid in the resort. The piste rescue service requires payment and will take your ski equipment as a deposit unless you produce a valid insurance card. It’s a good idea to carry a credit card & insurance details with you while on the mountain.
