Due to the layout of the valley, transport in Chamonix is vital for your enjoyment of your experience here. A car is advantageous, although parking can be difficult. The alternative is to use the bus shuttle or the train.

Car Hire

If you hire a car from Geneva Airport it's recommended that you hire from the French side not the international side as the French taxes are lower reducing the cost of your car hire. Also if you can avoid the Swiss motorway you will not need to purchase a motorway tax disc either. Take the A40 from Geneva towards Annemasse on to the "Autoroute Blanche" motorway until you reach Chamonix. It's about 1 hour by road. If you do not have a car fitted with winter tyres then remember to carry snow chains as you may need them. It's worth practising how to fit them in good conditions and keep a torch, old jacket and a set of gloves handy.

Parking

There are 3,800 parking spaces in town, but the ease of parking varies considerably during low and high season. There are 2 covered car parks: Saint-Michel (330 places) behind the church, and Entreves (150 places) in Chamonix Sud. Your carte d’hôte will entitle you to discounted weekly rates at either. Other parking facilities are split between free and metered parking. The resort map shows the locations of all car parks.

Open car park:
Parc du Grépon: 700 places , 0.50 per hour, 10 maximum for 24 hours.
Covered Parking (Closed 21h00 to 8:00)
• parking du Mont-Blanc: 200 places.
• parking Saint Michel: 330 places.
• parking d'Entrêves: 150 places.
Tariffs: 1 per hour, 2 per two hours, 9.50 full day.
